Music Album artwork

Hi first time sign in this is driving me crazy wondering if anybody can help.
Checked all albums with MP3 tag there is NO embedded artwork.
Have hidden and system files showing no floating jpg’s in folders.
Cannot find that High Voltage (U.S) album jpg on my computer, although i do remember it from somewhere. I once deleted all the US versions because i’m Australian so just kept the albums as we got them.
Play any of those albums in VLC and the correct artwork immediately downloads and displays in VLC.
Refresh, refresh…says it’s finished downloading metadata. Never changes. Hover over that jpg it shows a plex metadata address.
Obviously not obscure albums. Have restarted everything. Moved local media assets up and down the list. Signed in and out. Cleared trash in plex and computer…
This is my 2nd attempt at creating a music library last time across 1TB of albums it was a nightmare. This time i decided to add in smal lsections in fact today i added just the AC/DC folder so this is the entire music library at present.
Anybody know what on Earth is going on?
W7, Plex just updated to 1.3.2.3112

Additionally i Unmatched an album it reverted to a generic pic of the band from Highway to Hell era. i thought i had a glimmer of hope. Rematched to correct album and this blasted pic came back!

“Play any of those albums in VLC and the correct artwork immediately downloads and displays in VLC.”
Additional info- the INCORRECT artwork is never visible in VLC only Plex. According to VLC it has no artwork associated so it downloads the correct album cover.

Tried deleting library and adding anew.
Now instead of 16 albums having that pic 30 have it!
I love Plex but how can VLC immediately without hesitation go bang> There’s your artwork. And Plex runs you through this nightmare? I’ll leave it 24 hours and see if they fall in but i know i’m going to end up manually adding pics and when considering the size of my music library it makes it an almost impossible task. When VLC has full Chromecast support …

Seems to me this is happening because i don’t have a Plex pass they offer you a premium music library or standard. The onlly ones with correct art work are local. Anything external you get all the same picture.
I’ve tried everything possible.
The day VLC gets Chromecast Plex is dead in the water.
And thanks for all the help.

Are you shure about that?
Making ‘system’ files visible is a separate checkbox, than the one for ‘hidden’ files.

Look out for files with jpg, bmp, png or tbn filename extension.
(It helps, to activate display of filenames extensions too)

No.

Thanks Otto,
Folder options> Show hidden files etc
AND
Untick- hide protected system files.
Hide known file extensions is unticked i see all extensions.
Then i see all my desktop.ini files and a few icon files and various others.
That’s my default view anyway except i turn the system files off unless needed just to make my desktop tidier.
I sorta expected it’s not the Plex Pass thing i was just so pissed off and i’ve not tried to use Plex for Music for very long. So your comment confirms for me that it should be like TV shows and movies where i have little trouble…
Here i am the next day with all the same icons and i’m going to have to manually do 16 albums. It seems to be a sort of placeholder jpg that won’t disappear. I’ve found other threads where people had the exact same thing happening but the threads die out without being resolved.
I just added my Pink Floyd folder to see what happens. Much better but still 7 albums with a generic band pic. One album has the Folder jpg in it and even shows it in Windows explorer view but in Plex no matter what i do it’s the generic band pic.
It’s also dis[playing genre, popular tracks and band info for all artists even though i have those options unticked.
So is my last.fm scanner corrupted or something? What would i do to test or fix it?
Something is broken i just wish i knew how to fix it.
thanks for the input.

Ah, I see you got this - just wanted to make sure.

The band photo is also used, when a proper album cover art could not be obtained.

Where I 've seen this appear, it was almost always a rogue graphics file, stored somewhere way up in the folder hierarchy. Check your parent folders too.

Folder structure plays a role here too.
Do you have a proper Artist / Album / Tracks folder structure or do you have all files in one
big folder?

Those can come either from last.fm or from embedded meta tags in your files.
Where did you uncheck them? If it was in the options of the last.fm agent, then they come probably from your files.
Get a metadata editor and compare your file’s embedded meta tags with the content that appears in your library.

Do also keep in mind that there are actually separate agent settings for Artists vs. Albums.

Look at the order of the agents under
Settings - Server - Agents - Albums - last.fm
and which lines have a checkmark in front of them

Do the same under
Settings - Server - Agents - Artists - last.fm

When the ‘Local Media Assets’ agent is at the top position, then embedded meta data and sidecar cover art is favorised over last.fm-delivered data.

My folder hierarchy is ok i think although 10 years of collecting there are probably naming protocols not quite right here and there. The music is on a 5tb HD with folders for Movies, Tv Shows, and this one is called Musicall>Artist>Album>tracks
Example Beatles i have more than 100 albums, Zappa, Dylan…a lot of artists i have masses of bootlegs and alternative versions i’m not looking forward to what that’s going to be like. Although the naming protocol appears to be very standard for these current trouble files and they’re obviously big well known albums. It still annoys me that VLC never uses the rogue pic and finds the correct one online in a blink so it leaves you wondering…wtf?
My other libraries are very large Movies and TV and although there’s been a lot of work here and there with obscure Anime series and same named split ups etc…i’ve always been able to work out what and why. But not with music and i see from Googling that it’s been the troubled link in this Plex chain for a long time.
It’s a huge job but i’m going to go through and add things in small sections so i can clean up at the same time. I’ll Filebot everything and get the naming right and i’ll inspect tags and metadata.
Originally i had the extra info ON (genre etc) then i turned it OFF. I assumed when you update the library after that it would discard but it hasn’t. Checked it’s off for both Artist and Album in all scanners. Just added Led Zep it still gives genre. ACDC has all. Floyd has 2 out of 3…lol
I think you’re right about that AC-Dc jpg being a rogue file. Very well hidden can’t find it anywhere up the tree i even used a reverse image searcher called Visipics. Although most of those albums came from the same source so it’s likely.
I did change the naming, untag them, refolder them…all sorts of things. Lol…
Thanks very much for trying to help Otto you’ve given me more to think about i’ll persevere at least until VLC unveil fully working Chromecast support. Then i’ll use that just for music i think Plex would be a lot happier if we used something else for music. Cheers

Little tip:
If you have lots of bootlegs etc. you want to bring your embedded metatags into order first.
Then you need to have the Local Media Assets agent in top position. I wouldn’t trust last.fm to fetch correct info about bootlegs and special editions of albums, like those recent expanded re-releases of Zappa albums.
Put as much info into the meta tags as possible. Put a cover art inside the album folder and you should be good.
Makes sure to set at least ‘AlbumArtist’ and ‘AlbumTitle’ to the same content within one album.

I have collected some more info in the thread below. Although it talks about a Premium Music library, the stuff about file names and embedded meta tags applies to a normal music library just the same.

And here is another cut&paste from the Plex Pass forum:

You can supply your own artist photos, artist backdrops and album backdrops.
This however requires that your music files are organised in a folder structure like this:

Music /
|--Albumartistname /
   | artist-poster.jpg <--- a photo of the artist
   | artist-background.jpg <--- a background/wallpaper particular to the artist
   |--Albumtitle /
         cover.jpg <--- album cover
background.jpg <--- album background/wallpaper [if not present, inherited from the 'albumartist' level]
         1. Trackartist - Tracktitle.mp3
         1. Trackartist - Tracktitle.txt
         2. Trackartist - Tracktitle.mp3
         2. Trackartist - Tracktitle.lrc
         ...

The graphic files can be in jpg, png, or tbn format. For all filenames there are a few alternative names which can also be used.

The txt files can contain the song lyrics in plain text format.
The lrc files can contain the ‘timed’ song lyrics.

Hi, any news on the issue? Currently having the same behaviour on Server 1.14.0.5470.
And also having Plex Pass. Any suggestions? Ideas? Probably I can fill a bug somewhere?
