Multiple Editions - Feedback & Suggestions // mod: shared extras for editions in same folder

I’ve been waiting for this feature for ages, but I got to say that in its current state it leaves a lot to be desired for.
https://support.plex.tv/articles/multiple-editions/

Downsides of the current implementation - 2022-08-19:

  • Library gets cluttered with multiple instances of the same movie
  • the “edition tag” is not displayed in the library, so you cannot distinguish the editions as all instances use the same name and thumbnail (unless you manually change the thumbnail)
  • the ‘edition’ tag is not displayed in search results
  • does not work for tv series
  • if you use one folder per movie edition: local Extras do not show up in every edition of the movie unless you copy them to the folder of every edition (which is… “inefficient”)
  • if you place multiple editions of a movie in one folder: local extras break (see example below - local extras do not show up in either of the editions)
/Media/The Abyss/Behind The Scenes/Making Of.mkv
/Media/The Abyss/Trailers/Trailer 1.mkv
/Media/The Abyss/The Abyss {edition-Theatrical}.mkv
/Media/The Abyss/The Abyss {edition-Director's Cut}.mkv

Suggestion A (this should be relatively easy - though not the ideal solution):

  1. in the library always display the Edition Tag near the year (or overlay the thumbnail) so that we know what edition we select (2023-05 this has been implemented)
  2. when the folder structure below is used, present local extras in every edition of the movie
/Media/The Abyss/Behind The Scenes/Making Of.mkv
/Media/The Abyss/Trailers/Trailer 1.mkv
/Media/The Abyss/The Abyss {edition-Theatrical}.mkv
/Media/The Abyss/The Abyss {edition-Director's Cut}.mkv

Suggestion B (this is the ideal solution IMHO, but surly harder to implment):
Basically, do THIS
[mod-edit: duplicate → Possibility to hide editions from grid]

Mockup

The second part of your suggestion is already covered in another feature suggestion thread. I’ll therefore highlight this to avoid the threads from cannibalizing from each other.

I agree, but I’d like to have the ability to edit the second line in the library view, put things like running time or edition as well as the year.

Another problem is that in the iOS and TVOS apps, the other edition list doesn’t show the names of the other editions, no “Theatrical Cut” or “Director’s Cut.” This needs addressing, too.

There should be a “Play Edition” button, similar to the play version option, but next to the play button. Also, the “Other Editions” should be before the cast, not after the extras.

Used Blade Runner as a test for this addition, even when one of the films is the same title as the folder it is in, my local extras do not show up in any edition listings.

/Media/Blade Runner/Blade Runner.mkv
/Media/Blade Runner/Blade Runner {edition-The Final Cut}.mvk
/Media/Blade Runner/Blade Runner {edition-Director’s Cut}.mkv
/Media/Blade Runner/Deleted Scenes-deleted.mkv
/Media/Blade Runner/Trailers-trailer.mkv
etc…

before I had them all just titled as a featurette (The Final Cut-featurette.mkv), and all the extras were showing up, but not anymore.

yeah, currently you must not have multiple editions in one folder or local extras do not show up for any edition.
you must create one folder per edition and then have the extras in both folders to get the local extras to show up in each edition.
which is frankly… “inefficient”.

I have added this behavior to the first post.

I’m happy to see some progress made in the way of editions. I agree it could be better (I don’t really want to see both posters in the library) but I think this is a good start. I also really wish we could keep both editions in one folder. I’ve tried this and it wasn’t working well for me and I saw it wasn’t recommended.

+1 for this! Appreciate the addition of multiple versions! Just needs a little bit more work

Same than everyone else : i’m really pleased that this feature (asked for since an incredibly long time) is now roughly available (it’s a good start), but there are rooms for improvments, indeed.

I fully agree with first post.

One extra comment is about search : if you search for one title and click on it, you have a “Choose Source” pop-up that is at this time really difficult to work with (each edition is just shown as one “Library entry” but without showing which edition it is).

It took 10 years and all they added were tags & separating watched status.

We need the ability to clean up library views. The mock-up discussed above is how this feature should be implemented. One library entry and pivots within that entry to the different versions.

Currently, the only way to clean up the library view of multiple editions is to use a collection, but that doesn’t work because:

  • You can’t nest collections
  • Collections then become a mess

Not holding out hope they iterate on this, but glad someone started a thread about it.

THX! I added this to the list in the first post.

It would be great if we have editions for TV episodes too.

I personally think of different editions as completely unique movies (e.g. Brazil, Payback, Lord of the Rings, etc) that deserve to have their own entries and posters. Often times their blu-ray releases also have unique extras that would also warrant this (requiring completely separate directories/folders for Plex to support). But, that all said I do like the mockup graphic linked above, which is effectively a mini-collection, as long as pivoting editions still supports unique posters, extras, external subtitles, etc. The holy grail would be to support both with a Settings option, but developers don’t like supporting multiple presentations.

I agree, but the ROI on this is so much smaller than the Movie feature. Other than remastered old shows, I would only want a fake 2nd edition of a show that simply defaulted to a different audio/subtitle setting (e.g. Censored Original, Original, Dubbed-English, etc). This would make it easier for multiple users of my server to stream Anime the way that they like it, or if you want to watch a censored version of a series (e.g. Rick and Morty).

That already exists in Plex, there is a ‘separate’ option to i. e. split 1080p and 4k into separate items.

The option would be to NOT auto-merge different editions into a single entry in the first place. Yes, splitting them manually is how I am currently creating different editions today. No need to change filenames.

You’re now mixing up different concepts.

  1. As of today, only different (quality) versions of the same movie (edition) are being merged into a single entry.
  2. Editions don’t currently collapse but users have been asking for a way to show only a generic movie entry in the library with an option to access the different editions from the movie’s details page (e.g. via the “other editions of…” hub). Focus was on having that as an option as not all users might want to collapse all their editions.

Not sure if this was in response to me or not.

If movie editions were handled as seen in the concept I linked to in the first post, then the already existing ‘split’ feature could be used to ‘de-bundle’ the editions of a movie into individual items.

Yea, I also don’t know who or what you’re addressing. The graphic that @c_holzer linked to of the movie Noah has 3 different editions listed at the top edge of the screen (this is a proposal of a hypothetical feature). That’s what I was referring to about “auto-merging editions”, because IFF Plex did ever implement this, I assume it would apply it automatically to your database, UNLESS there was an option in Settings to opt-out.

I finally tried out Editions today and it’s a good start. The comments in this thread are spot on.

Personally, I could be pretty happy if they simply added the Edition text to the library views, so we could differentiate our multiple copies of the same poster.

I realized I can change the posters, and I probably will, but my metadata way of life is to minimize manual edits.

Great feature to finally be added but the implementation is lacking. I would love to have different editions of the movies show up as a single title and then you select which one at that point.

Library management has been a pain and it took me a while to get my library into compliance with the recommended naming. Adding another folder for every edition to simply having them “not” be auto combined made me go from excited to disappointed. Despite this just having it grab different cover art or adjusting the titles would have been enough to keep me excited.
