Posting Log Files

In an effort to help troubleshoot an issue you post about, you may be asked to post your log files. While posting your logs in the forum is optional, some issues cannot be investigated without logs to review. It may be difficult or impossible for the community to help you without your logs. We respect your privacy and want to ensure you are fully aware of what kind of personally identifiable information may be contained in your log files, so you can make an informed decision that best suits your needs and desires.

How to Gather Your Logs

See our support article on how to gather your logs for more information.

Facts on Posting Logs

  • Logs attached to a public post (not a private message) can be viewed and downloaded by all users with a Plex and forum account who are logged in to Plex and the forums.
  • Users who are not logged in cannot view or download log files or other attachments.

Example Info in Logs

  • Email address used with Plex account
  • Username used with Plex account
  • External IP addresses
  • Server “friendly” names, as configured in Plex Web
  • Client device names, as shown in Plex Web
  • Titles, filenames, and folder structures for movies, series, episodes, albums, songs, videos, and photos that are played, synced, or optimized

Tip!

Access tokens let you perform tasks as your account, so they’re private information and hidden by default. Before sharing logs, make sure that you have not changed the server setting such that access tokens appear in logs. Make sure the Allow Plex Media Server tokens in logs preference is disabled in your server settings.

If you’re disabling this so you can share logs, be sure to: (1) quit/stop your Plex Media Server after disabling the preference, (2) delete the contents of your server Logs directory and then (3) launch your Plex Media Server again before reproducing an issue and gathering logs.
