Video File Naming

Server Version#:Windows
Player Version#:

It seems Plex grabs the names for my video files from different places rather than just the file name. I went through all of my video folders and edited the video names. Plex changed the names back in one folder after I added a couple of new files to the folder. Why is this happening and how can I stop this and protect the video names I want?

Are the mp4 files?

Yes they are MP4 files.

Sounds like they have metadata embedded and that you might have the ‘local media assets’ agent is enabled for that Library.

This support article talks about how to re-arrange priority of the metadata agents settings.

Thank you, I’ll check it out.

With LMA in priority, Embedded Titles within MP4/M4V files are preferred - even over a perfect file name. Local Media Assets should - AT ALL TIMES - remain enabled (unless specifically instructed to turn it off).

Local Media Assets should be ‘Demoted’, to the bottom of the stack of active agents under ALL tabs in Shows and Movies, but should NOT be disabled.

Local Media Assets is needed for many things - it doesn’t need to be given Tip-Top-Priority (as Plex has so hatefully placed it as it’s default position).

You can easily strip all of the embedded metadata from MP4 files with MP3tag (i.e. File, Remove Tag).

1.4 million times if you have that many items with embedded titles - or you can move LMA once (under ALL tabs in Shows and Movies) and stop worrying about it.

It’s even easier to remove Title and Description Fields in MP4/M4Vs with Windows Explorer - if you enable the Details pane (<—highlight/delete/save), until you have to do it 1.4 million times, taking ‘easy’ right off the table (but you can ‘start’ doing it with new stuff).
